Advice From The Allergist –
Leading A Healthy & “Allergy-Friendly” Lifestyle

Bedding

- Use a zippered allergen-proof encasing over all bedding
   
- Encase all beds if there is more than one in the room
   
- Wash all bed linen and blanket every 2 weeks
   
- Allergen-proof encasing are washed 2-3 monthly. Wash with hot water (60ºC) or add anti-mite laundry solution to cold water
   
- Most anti-mite mattresses use a chemical coating to reduce mite growth. This coating wears out after 6 months. Therefore, it is necessary to encase the bedding with allergen-proof encasing to sustain against dust mite and in the long run

Air

- Use a healthcare-grade True HEPA air purifier to remove airborne allergens – house dust mites & their dropping, cockroach faeces, grass pollen, animal dander, mould, odour and other gaseous pollutants
   
- Wash or vacuum air-conditioner filters every 2 weeks
   
- Every month, spray the inner parts of air-conditioner with anti-mould treatments to inhibit mould & bacteria build-up
   
- Fit special air-conditioner filter, which trap finer particles (mould spores, bacteria, etc) over existing normal filters

Carpets, curtains & upholstry

- Ideally, remove all carpets & soft furnishings
   
- Otherwise, treat them with anti-mite solutions, which kills dust mites and provides a protective coating against mite for up to 3 months
   
- Use blinds or window shades, which can be easily wiped, instead of curtains. For fabric curtains, wash every 2 weeks with hot water (60ºC) or use anti-mite spray treatments (for 2 monthly protection against dustmites)
   
- Avoid upholstered furniture, Use leather, wood, plastic or vinyl furnishings instead. Otherwise, use anti-mite spray treatment on upholstered furniture

Cleaning Tips

- Environmentally friendly (biodegradable) household cleaning solutions are usually allergy-friendly and are preferred
   
- Steam cleaning is a natural, effective and powerful cleaning approached to most of our daily household chores
   
- Alternative, wet mopping minimized dust uplift, which should be done every 2-3 days. -Avoid sweeping as it stirs up a lot of dust particles
   
- Use healthcare-grade True HEPA vacuum cleaner with high airflow rate for optimal performance and filtration of airborne allergens
   
- Hot water wash (60ºC) all soft toys or use anti-mite solution with cold wash. If your child’s soft toys are not machine washable, place them into plastic bags and keep them in the freezer overnight once every 2 weeks to kill the mites. Vacuum the soft toys the following day
   
- Keep all clothing, decorative items and books in enclosed cupboards to minimize dust built-up
   
- Limit household plants to reduce mould growth & pollen build-up

Pets

- Keep your pet outside if conditions permits
   
- Bath your pet regularly. Apply allergen-control pet moisturizing conditioner weekly to neutralize the pet allergens
   
- Clean and vacuum areas where your pets move about regularly to effectively remove their dander

Other Allergy-Friendly Tips

- Hypo-allergenic vitamin supplements and immune boosters are recommended to maintain a healthy immune system
   
- For sensitive conditions, use hypo-allergenic skin care products
